Fix Straightened Rebonded Hair- Bad Hair Day

It's been 1 year since my last hair rebond and I can see kinks and dents all over the surface of my hair like it's returning back to it's natural wavy state. I originally have wavy hair and straightened it when I was just 13. If only I could turn back time I wouldn't have done it because it damaged my hair a lot. I once have a very shiny and fine hair but after the straightening process, it made my hair coarse and needs a lot of maintenance. I keep telling my cousins not to straighten their hairs but then they don't listen to my advice since they are enticed by all these Koreanovelas (Well, regrets always comes last). I always rebond my hair every year and it's really expensive because if I don't, my hair will be a total wreck. The rebonded hair usually returns back to its original state around the 8 month from the rebonding process and you'll noticed this time that your hair will wave at the back and split ends are visible plus not to mention the stiffness. No matter how I invest in expensive shampoos and conditioners, the efforts are futile. Only the salon can fix it and by way of fixing it is to rebond your hair again. Just imagine the harmful chemicals and the damage it will cause to your hair. Sometimes, I'll just chopped them off but the time you've spent with your hair just to grew it long is wasted. Anyway, this year I will try my best not to be wooed to rebond my hair for a change. The process will be a lot frustating and tedious but I must endure it to heal my hair. At this moment, my hair starts to frizz all over when I woke up and it's really difficult to manage it when I go to school or when I go out. Here are the things I did to avoid bad hair days again with your straightened / rebonded hair.

Tips:

1. Wash your hair at night and when it's 80% dry, braid your hair in big braids if you want big wavy curls and small braids if you want small wavy curls. This technique will give you a beachy wave in the morning. Braid the hair tight to make the curls visible. In this photo, I braid it loosely.  It will also save you time preparing in the morning. Please don't sleep on your hair when it's still around 100% wet or your pillow will get soaked or you'll get sick while sleeping with wet hair. Untie your braids only 5 minutes before you go to school and spray it with anti-frizz hairspray. I don't recommend this technique if you'll be wearing this hairstyle all day long. Outside environmental factors will likely cause your curls to return to it's normal state. Always bring a hair tie or hair clamp.

2.  Heatless wavy Hair using 2 strands twist.

This technique is best if you have long to medium hair. You can sleep with this hairstyle and take it all out 5 minutes before going to school or work and after wearing your make up. If you have thick hair, you may not use hairspray anymore. This curl will eventually relaxed at the end of the day making it look like a natural wave.

3. Damage free sexy curls using flexi rolls or foam rods

I totally recommend this one if you want to last your curls whole day long. No need to use hairspray since I hate using hairspray to my hair cause my rhinitis will be activated. All you need to do is to roll your hair using this flexi foam rolls and sleep overnight. Your hair should be 85% damp to get that super sexy curls and it helps your hair last all day. You can buy this in the beauty section of your favorite store. I brought mine at Watsons for Php 140.00 for a set of 12. I brought 2 packs since I have thick coarse hair.

4. Not-so-messy hair bun
This will not totally work on rebonded hair all the time especially if you don't use hairspray. You will need hairspray to tame all the frizzes especially if your haircut is layered. I don't really like messy buns since rebonded layered hair will not look good in messy buns. This bun is more likely in the middle of messy and non-messy. You may need a cute bow clip to hide the unruly hair after making the bun.

5. Regular or artistic hair braids

The key to this regular look is to wear make up and wear a cute or striking accessory. No matter how messy or regular your hair look like but make sure your face is not. This is to avoid you from looking just waking up. Conceal that puffy eyes my dear and always wear your eye liner.

What is the Pell Grant Worth?

The Pell Grant got its start as the Basic Education Opportunity Grant, or BEOG sometime in the 1970's; it was later named for Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell.  The idea was simple: To provide a basic level of financial support for students from low income families who aspired to go to college.

It's almost certainly had a lot to do with increased levels of educational attainment in America, but rapid tuition increases, coupled with lower increases for the Pell, means the gap between Pell and tuition has gotten bigger over time.

The College Board has complied a lot of good data on this and other financial aid trends in its report, updated annually, on its Higher Education Trends site, where you can download the data. Unfortunately, the data looks like this when you get it.  Maybe you can extract the insight; I can't.

So I pulled it into Tableau and spent an hour or so with it to see what I could find.  It's below.  The College Board has calculated enrollment-weighted average tuition by type (4-year public and 4-year private, not-for-profit) which makes comparisons easier, and has adjusted everything (including the maximum Pell Grant) for inflation.  You can see on the three views what's happened to tuition, fees, and Pell; how much they've changed on a percentage basis; and the purchasing power of Pell over time.

Occasionally (OK, frequently) I've criticized highly selective institutions for enrolling very low percentages of Pell Grant students in their freshman class.  If you wanted to argue that they don't make much business sense, you might have a point.  But you'd also be right in pointing out that the diminished purchasing power of Pell is due in large part to rapid increases in tuition. So there's plenty of blame to go around.

What else do you see?

10 Signs Your Classmates Dislike You

Yey! It's the start of the second semester and everyone's getting excited to go to school except that one person whose been silently bullied by their classmates. I feel really pity to this guy at school where all my classmates simply disgust everything about him. As to the guy's history, I don't really know him that much as well but maybe there are factors on what caused them to hate him. As a transferee student, I observe my classmates a lot because I was looking for a potential new close friend but then it's really difficult to invest one's self to people you've known for a sem. Eventually, it will happen naturally...Anyway, back to the main topic, here are the 10 signs your classmates despises your presence at school.

1.When the teacher calls your name during oral recitation, your classmates laughs secretly and wishing you can't answer the questions asked.

2. You will be the last person to know that they've decided a scheduled quiz or exam. They will not include you during the planning.

3.They secretly take photos or videos of you during awkward moments and worst of all they'll make fun of it and spreads it on Facebook without you knowing it.

4. They make secret code name of you and you will not know you're the one they're talking about.

5. They add you in Facebook just to get information about your life and you're one of those person who can't see the post of your classmates since they hide it from you.

6. They will not tagged you in photos or any post. You will be an outcast to them.
7. When you arrived in school, they will judge your outfit or what you're wearing.

8. They will distant their selves around you. You will probably have no seatmate in class.

9. You will be the topic of the class if you're absent.

November 2014

10. Never ever forget your things like pens, books, etc. since nobody will dare to share it with you.

Any signs you can share why you're classmates, workmates or group mates hates you? Tell me in the comment below.

Last Month's Favorite Stuffs - October 2014

Hey there! I've been wanting to blog on what are the things I love last month. I believe that everyday is a new day to learn and discover new things. Here are the list of stuffs and activities I raved last month. When I say stuffs, it pretty ranges up to everything from food, beauty products, etc.

  1. Kopiko's Cafe Blanca - Yep! I guess I'm addicted to this coffee right now. I'm not really a fan of Kopiko brand but when I tried Cafe Blanca, I went gaga over it and can't start my day without a sip.
  2. Hapee Toothpaste - I know you'll find me weird but I just want to tell you that their toothpaste improved. I'm very picky when it comes to my toothpaste since I have the tendency of puking (gagging) while brushing my teeth if I don't like the taste of the toothpaste. If you're looking for substitute of Colgate or Sensodyne, the new Hapee toothpaste is definitely a good buy. (I'm talking about the silver tube, I haven't tried the other Hapee toothpaste variants)
  3. Baygon Mosquito Paper - I have no idea there's a product like this. It's like a notepad where you will have to tear off the paper, burn it and blam! Instant mosquito killer. I can really promise you that the mosquitoes will be dead instantly plus it gives off a lavender-like scent (my allergic rhinitis did not react).
  4. Selecta Cornetto Ubebe - I can't believe it!!! I can eat my favorite ice cream flavors in one (1) cone for just P20.00. I can really say that our taste buds does evolved when we grew up. I remember, I hated ube (taro) flavor very much but now, it's one of my favorite ice cream flavor. I hope Cornetto will have a Speculoos cookie butter flavor soon.

  5. Selecta's Dutch Speculoos ice cream - I can finish the whole tub by myself then I'll cry over and keep blaming myself after such reckless act of ruining my whole diet.                                                                                                                                                                                        Photo credit to randomreviewsph
  6. Kastair Montelukast tablet - this is way more effective than xyzal and claritin but then I will just take this when I sneezed for about 30 minutes non-stop. If it is just a mild allergic reaction, I'll prefer the xyzal, claritin or the aerius. Only those people who have rhinitis can understand this. Ha!
  7. Nissin Waffle Deluxe- I thought it's just another wafer biscuit but it's not! It reminds of Apollo wafer stick which I used to eat when I was just a wee kid. Apollo is like a product brand from Malaysia but it's not available in regular grocery stores. I noticed that it's available only in muslim barter trade centers. Nissin is way more evolved in taste since it has crispy rice treats inside which make it more crunchier and tastier.

  8. Nissin Pasta Express Instant Creamy Carbonara - What's going on with my taste bud? (I'm pretty sure I'm not preggy LOL!) Before, I really really hate carbonara (instant or not) but this one got my taste. Duh?! Maybe because it's salty enough for my taste bud (forgive me!!! I know what you're thinking!). The other day, I went to the grocery and I was planning to buy 10 packs of it but it was long gone said the person in-charged. What?!? How could they didn't spare me even one pack. (Grrrrrrr)
  9. McDonald's McFlurry Honey Gold flakes- I gained 2 kilos while eating this 5 days consecutively. I was way over my daily calorie needs. Now you know I have a very soft spot when it comes to ice cream. The crunchy feel in your mouth that melts together with the ice cream is making me gaga! Every time  I get upset after my night class I always treat myself in McDonald's. Geesh!!! Good thing my cravings subside when I found out I gained 2 kilos. Ha!

  10. J.Lo's new single Big Booty featuring Iggy Azalea - All I can say is "Damn!!". You must watch the video of this song and tell me your first reaction to it. J.Lo is such a MILF (according to my bf). The video inspires me to work out again. Whew! It's a sign that I need to repent from all those things I've mentioned prior to this. LOL!

Four Ways to Look at College Tuition in the States

College tuition is a hot topic these days, in case you've not noticed.  But often, the stories focus on a national perspective: Tuition is up a gazillion percent in ten years, for instance, or average tuition increases last year were 4.9%.  Sometimes, big states like California get attention because there are so many students affected by tuition increases (and because 9% of all college students in the US are in California Community Colleges.)

So I took data from the College Board, and looked at it four different ways, to show how the story changes depending on where you live.  Each of these four views requires you to choose a type of institution (public four-year, public two-year, or private not-for-profit), and to choose whether you want to look at inflation adjusted tuition or nominal (non adjusted).  I recommend inflation-adjusted (unless you're interested in nostalgia) because it gives you a better sense of how much tuition has increased. One view (at the bottom) also allows you to compare over any period of time, by changing the beginning or ending years.

Before beginning, just a caution: Different states have different numbers of private institutions, and varying levels of selectivity among them.  I'm not sure the average tuition and fees at private universities in any state is especially meaningful, but I've included it here anyway.  The data was free, so ignore it if you agree with me on this point.

And while the story of this post is tuition, there is a sub-context as well: The things that interest me about data visualization.  The story you want to tell drives the way you choose to display your data. The corollary, of course, is that the display you choose limits the story you can tell. So choose wisely.

Here's the first.  On this you must also choose a focus state, by using the control on the right. The state you select then changes color to show where it ranks among the states.

Next is a view of all the states, with the rank of tuition represented by color. Red is high, blue is low. It gives you a good perspective, I think, on the geographic effect on tuition: Northeast and West Coasts are high, while the middle of the country is low.  What you see in rank, though, you miss in spread; you can't tell how much separates #32 and #33, for instance, like you can on the first view. So the bar chart below should help you there.

Next is a heat map; it neither arrays the data on a map to allow the geography, nor tells the spread, but it does show you the entire data set over time, relative to rank: Has any state gone from blue to red, or vice versa (meaning its rank had changed?) Quite the contrary, of course. Most states stay pretty stable in their position relative to each other.

And finally, a good old line chart.  See the trends for one state, both with regard to actual dollar amounts for the three different types of institutions, and the percent change over time. The spread between the three different types is most interesting, I think.  Compare California to Vermont to Florida to Texas, for instance, to see how those states' philosophies vary.  Note that you can change the time window by de-selecting any years to leave just the ones you want.

It's a Bloody Month

It's that time of that month again where everything just don't feel right. I can really say that I'm an irritable person especially during my menstrual periods. I don't believe being irritable during this time is due to hormonal imbalance. For me, the irritability is due to discomfort, dysmenorrhea and the yucky feeling of menstruation. I'm one of those women whose flow is medium to heavy but not the heavy kind like menorrhagia. Regular pads or napkin won't work on me because I love to move around like I have an extra energy during my periods and due to many activities, leakage is the common fact. I think I've tried almost all the brands of feminine pads except tampons. The first thing you should check on the labels is if it's COTTONY and don't buy if it's not 'coz you'll just waste your money. Net perforated pads or napkins (common pinoy term) will cause rashes, friction, less absorption plus the plastic-like material causes body heat down there and it's irritatingly discomforting. My best top 3 brand of feminine pads out there is Modess, Whisper and Charmee but right now, I'm using Charmee since it's very affordable compared to the other two brands and it has this Micro dimple cover for quicker absorption. With these three brands, I only buy the Night Use even if I don't use it at night (lol). It doesn't mean that you can only use it at night but use it at your own comfort and preference. I like my pads with wings but on the 4th day where the blood ceases to flow, I prefer the non-winged pad. I usually buy two kinds of feminine pads every month, the one with the wings and the other don't have. During menstrual periods, I also recommend you to use a non-cottony undies or having a satiny material because if you'll get leakage, it's easier to wash them unlike cottony material where if the blood dries up, it's really difficult to get off the stain. The downside of satin-like panties, the pads don't stick that much and it will likely cause leakage if you move a lot but the longer pads with the extended back portion protects you from back leakage (as to my experience) but you can use whatever underwear you want under your preference (I'm not really imposing). Hope this post helps you girls. Share what you have in mind by leaving a comment below. Have a happy period. (Ha!)

More on Endowment Resources and Low-income students

I've just finished writing an article for the Chronicle of Higher Education (which is why I haven't posted in a while) talking about our first-generation, low-income student challenge.  This chart didn't make the final cut because the article has a lot of charts, and I tried to keep them simple.  But I do think it's instructive.

Each dot represents an institution; you can hover over the dot to see details.  They're colored by freshman selectivity (red dots mean institutions with a freshman admission rate of under 15%, using 2012 IPEDS data, and green is admit rates between 50% and 75%, for instance.)  They are arrayed on two scales: Endowment assets per FTE student enrollment (high to low, from top to bottom) and the Full-pay/Pell Spread. To calculate the Full-pay/Pell Spread, you simply subtract the percentage of undergraduates with Pell Grants from the percentage of all students who receive no institutional aid (also know as full-pay students.)  Institutions on the right side of the zero have more full-pay, institutions on the left have more Pell students.

If you want to eliminate some of the noise, use the filters to limit the view. In fact, limiting by mean SAT scores, or by state allows you to see some interesting patterns in the data.  Sometimes, what you see is really something else disguised in a more friendly name.

What do you see?
