Does Ethnicity Determine Where You Go to College?

The answer to the headline, of course, is "no."  Race is not determinant of where you go to college, but race--or more probably the factors that vary with race and ethnicity--may influence your college choice set, which can, of course, influence where you go to college.

I've written before about how all these variables are at play with each other: In America, race, income, parental attainment, and presumably, opportunity, all cluster together.

And, after you look at this, you'll see how opportunity gets distributed by race, provided you're willing to click a button or two.  The visualization starts off showing all undergraduate enrollment in almost 7,000 post-secondary institutions who report to IPEDS.  (And before you object, I've believe strongly that the college you attend is not your destiny, and that education is what you make of it, as I've written before on my other blog. But it's also clear that many people believe talent congregates at the "best" colleges, and the way this plays out in hiring and graduation school admissions can be troublesome.)

As you can see, almost 75% of all undergraduates go to a public institution; the majority of them go to Associate's granting institutions (almost all community colleges.)

But use the control at the top right to see how the distribution changes: Try Black or Hispanic or Asian or White to watch the bars move.  What you see is a change: Hispanic and African-American students go to community colleges and for-profits at much higher rates than their White and Asian peers.  White students go to private, not-for-profits at higher rates than almost any group, except Non-residents.

International (Non-resident, here) students flock to research universities, but are also far more likely than any group to attend a private university.  This is because they avoid for-profits in great numbers.

What else do you notice?

If you want to limit the population, feel free to use any of the filters, but beware that the percent of totals are taken on the base of the sub-population you've chosen, not the entire population.  You'll notice there are further differences by geography and campus urbanization among other things. I'd love to hear what you turn up that's intriguing.

Endowments Over Time

Is it true that the rich get richer, as suggested by a recent Washington Post article discussing college endowments?  Probably.

But what's more interesting is the pecking order in the world of endowments, and how it's changed (or not) over the last decade or so.  I downloaded trend data from IPEDS showing beginning of year endowment by fiscal year for about 160 four-year private institutions with enrollments of at least 5,000.  To be sure, there are some very well endowed colleges who have smaller enrollments (Williams, Pomona, Grinnell, etc.) but this chart could get messy pretty fast.

I pulled the data into Tableau and created a bump chart, showing not the value over time (because everyone does that) but rather the rank of all the endowments shown.  So, for instance, if a line slopes down, it might mean a college has gone from 10th to 20; a slope up might show the opposite.

But what we see here are lines that are essentially flat.  There are a couple anomalies, of course, and as with IPEDS always, a warning about human errors in data entry, incompetence, or other agendas at work is in order.  When data was missing for a year, I simply put the prior year's data in its place for continuity.

I started with 30, but you can show more or fewer using the slider at the top.  Just pull it to whatever number of colleges to display.

See anything interesting?

A Look at Federal Loans for Students

We hear all the time about the student loan bubble.  Is it a problem?  Like most things, it depends on how you look at it.  Here is data viewed from a very high level, without the benefit of being able to drill down.

It shows the status of the government's student loan portfolio, broken out by the older FFEL programs and the currently existing Direct Loan Program; the FFEL loans are older, while the Direct Loans are a mixture of old and new.

Some interesting trends appear, even over relatively short periods of time.  What do you see?

And, if we had access to better, more granular data, what would you like to see?

My Top 5 Best Free Selfie Apps

Am I the only one of those people who keeps on track of the best  #selfie app available on the app store? Yes, I'm a self confessed #selfie addict and my boyfriend want me to check me in #selfie rehab. My gallery consist of maximum 200 #selfie shots per day (Well, sometimes it depends upon my mood). LOL! Anyway, here are my top 5 #selfie apps I'm totally raving about.

1. B612 (Selfie from the heart) - sounds ridiculous right? I'm a bit skeptical of it at first too. Like, what? Why on earth did they named the app to B612? Well, I did a little bit of research on how did they come up with the name. B612 was named for one of the planets that the prince from the short novel "The Little Prince" lived on.
Yes, you can take videos in collage format. It's so cool you can choose any kind of collage shapes, sizes and lots of filters to choose from. This is a 1:1 photo size which is great if you love posting photos to your Instagram. I haven't encountered problems posting photos to social medias like Facebook and Instagram with this app yet. I'm 101% in love with B612. Truly this is the ultimate #selfie app for me.
I love this filter so much because it will smooth out your skin and enhances the harsh light into soft baby-like, pink tones. What's best with this app is you can easily change the filter by just swiping the screen and doesn't have that shameful camera shutter noise every time you take a picture. Other features include : 3 secs. video selfie, collage video selfie, change or remove the background music of the video and turns your photo into .gif images. The two things I don't like with B612 are the watermarked logos (which you can choose different watermark logo) and the non-automatic save photo option. You'll have to manually save the photos and videos or else, it will all be gone after that tiring #selfie exhibitions you've done.

2. Candy Camera for Selfie - this is my second best camera #selfie app. You can choose a lot of filters just like B612 by swiping the screen. The one thing I love with this #selfie app is you can add stickers to your photos. If you're the kind of girl who loves to design their selfies with cute stickers, then this app is for you. In my case, I only love the animal stickers where I can change the head of my photos into cats or dogs. I like that there's no watermark on the photos but this app resizes the quality of the photos even if your built-in camera phone is high-end. Compared to B612, you may have the option to change the filter of your photos afterwards in this app which you're not allowed to do it on B612.

3. Camera360 Ultimate - if you have some serious skin problem like acne, this #selfie app is ultimately made for you. I remember, I'm a huge fan of this app before because of my history of adult acne which I don't have anymore. I only use this app during times when I have pimples or those days when I just have bad skin due to lack of sleep or any other factors. I've known a lot of people who loves to use this app and you'll just be surprised they're not really that good looking in person. I mean, the expectation was really high because your face or skin is simply perfect when you've posted it online but then in person, you're not that perfect. I refrain from using this app ever since to avoid expectations from people especially if you've just met them online. Sometimes it just feels so fake with all the photo editing going on.
The photo above is my before and after effect using Camera360 Selfie app. Look how drastic the change it made to my photo. I just look so damn perfect on this picture which I'm not really a fan. I want my photo to be as real as possible and not like this. But this app is really a great blessing for people who have serious acne problems but love to take selfies or groufies. Atleast, you look great in photos though...just don't overdo the photo editing so people won't get  upset if they meet you in person.

Anyway, this app have some serious photo editing features compared to the two apps I've mentioned above. You  may also edit photos taken with the regular built-in cam and change it's brightness, saturation, hues, and many more. Camera360 is an all-in-one selfie  app and it has its own cloud service where you can store your huge collection of selfies.

4. Perfect365 - This app will give you the realistic effect of applying make-up on your face. I can say that the Perfect365 is the mobile version of  Taaz Online Makeover. You can even change your eye color realistically. The two things I don't like about this selfie app are not all make-up presets are for free and in the free version, whenever you save the image, it will resize the quality of your picture. No wonder why Kim Kardashian swear on this app.

5. Beauty Plus - You can do regular selfie and video selfie on this app just like B612 and can beautify photos not taken from this app. The downside of this app is it don't have much filters unlike in B612. The video selfie's quality is not really that great but the regular image selfie quality is superb. Just make sure your front camera's megapixel is high or else the photo will come out grainy even in well-lighted room. I noticed Japanese users love this app because it will make your face doll-like.

How To Wear Flash Metallic Tattoos

Wanna feel more the summer season? How about add a little summery glow feel to your skin with flash tattoos also known as temporary metallic body tattoos. No idea what I'm talking about? Actually, this stuff is just an upgrade version of temporary tattoos we had during our childhood days (90's kid).

This is how it looks like. It comes in different designs per pack. Other designs comes in butterflies, Egyptian hieroglyphs, flowers, typography and some random designs. The boho inspired designs are more popular since flash tattoos are usually use in music festivals where the theme is somewhat bohemian.

Before transferring the tattoo to your skin, make sure to clean the area well and make it free from oils or lotion or else the design will not adhere. It's also advisable that the skin area doesn't have hairs. So, I think you better wax or shave that skin before sticking the tattoo on that area but in my case, I've tried placing the tattoo with hairs on my skin, while it still adhered but it's kinda' messy to look at 'coz the design peeled off easily. You don't want your tattoo to look patchy right? Now, let's start doing pretty art to our bodies by following the instructions below.

1. Check the designs inside the pack and try to measure the size of the specific design you'd like to place on that specific part of your body (hands, legs, belly, chest, etc.).

2. Get a scissor and cut the specific design you'd like to use. Make sure not to cut the transparent sticky portion which is located at the edge of every designs. It helps keep the tattoo stick to your skin. Actually, you may cut it a little bit but not completely. In my case, I did cut it a little bit 'coz in my experience, the edges are quite messy to look at.

3. Get a piece of wet cotton balls or sponge. Take off the transparent film and place the design facing downside. Dab the back of the paper with the wet cotton balls or sponge until it's all soaked but not dripping wet. Dab it carefully and avoid moving the paper while dabbing it 'coz you might move and screw the design during the process of transferring it to the skin.

4. Gently pull off the paper away from the skin. You'll know the transfer of the temporary tattoo is successful if the design is perfectly adhered to the skin. Let the tattoo dry before touching it or else you'll ruin the design.

Yes, Your Yield Rate is Falling

A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education pointed out the things colleges are doing to bolster their yield rates.  This of course, raised an interesting question among many outside of higher education: What's a yield rate?

Colleges admit many more students than they want to enroll, of course.  But let's say you want to enroll a class of 1,000.  How many, exactly, do you need to admit?  Most of the students you admit will have more offers than the ones you send, and they can only enroll in one place. So, if you admit 2,000, you need exactly half of them to enroll, which would mean a yield rate of 50%.  If you're not confident you can get that kind of yield, you admit more: 2,500 with a 40% yield rate gets you that same number (40% of 2,500).  But with most institutions, yield rates are closer to 30%, so that means 3,333.  Or thereabouts.

Alas, many colleges are afraid of that admit rate (the percentage of applicants admitted) getting too high, because for many parents and students, a low admission rate is a proxy for quality: An admit rate of 15% means (to some) that an institution is better than one with an admit rate of 30%.  And so on.  Part of what they do is generate "softer" applications, via a variety of methods I've talked about many times, ad nauseam. But the problem is that you don't know precisely who a soft app is, so you can't just take the same number of students, because the soft apps (with lower propensity to yield) will bring down your yield rate.  So admit rates fall, but ultimately, so do yield rates.

Managing and reviewing more applications is expensive, and if you care greatly about that admit rate, you try to keep it as low as possible and still make your class, by raising the yield.  Looking at demonstrated interest is one way; using financial aid more strategically is another; and finally, good old fashioned tactical approaches are another still.  Many places use all three.

Here is what our wheel spinning and tail chasing has spawned: Thirteen years of increasing applications, increasing admit rates, and decreasing yield and draw rates (draw is a better measure of market position vis-a-vis competitors because it punishes you if you try to appear more selective at the price of yield).

The first view here shows colleges in groups, starting with all 1,432 public and private not-for-profit, four-year, degree granting colleges in the US that admit freshmen in the traditional Carnegie classifications (Baccalaureate, Master's and Doctoral, excluding Baccalaureate-Associates colleges). You can use the filters to look at any combination of variables you'd like to see how things have changed.

The second view (using the tab across the top) allows you to use the filter to select any single college. And, if you're like most people, the first ones you select will be the big names, who trends appear to move in the opposite direction of the industry as a whole.  Which means, that for all those institutions trying to look like they're in the RBL (REALLY Big Leagues), all your effort has put you farther behind.

10 Struggles of Sexually Active Women

Hey girls! I'm back. I was reading this magazine and it came to my mind "Why didn't I write something like this?". The article was about the struggles of women who are taking the pills. In this case, I will be talking about the common struggles of women who are sexually active.

Believe it or not the moment you gave yourself away to a special person, that's when the time you'll know that being sexually active has it's downside too. The struggle is real and sometimes it's a matter of life and death. LOL!

1. For first timers, it's a knee weakening experience.

The horrifying fact is when both are inexperienced, so there's a possibility the condom slipped off while doing the deed or on the spur of the moment, no protection was used whatsoever.

2. Breaking the news to your friend or family.

Of course, you're not going to break the news to your parents (If they're conservative people), it's suicidal! Sometimes we all need someone to share our secrets to. It's a way to lighten up the burden and that's the job of our best friends.

3. Keeps forgetting to take the pill on time.

Nobody's going to remind you but yourself. Taking the pill on time is a serious matter. Forgetting to take the pill on time gives you a higher chance of getting pregnant. Girl, you may need an alarm clock to remind you all the time.

4. The search for the perfect hiding place of your pill packet.

If you're still living with your parents, you better be a genius on how to hide your private stuffs away from your siblings and your parents.

5.  Peace of mind is not in your vocabulary.

Having a 1 day period delay scares the shit out of you. Even if the pill is 99.9% effective, you're pessimistic of the .1%. Sometimes you'll just have to give up worrying and believe in the power of science.

6. Hormones are out of control.

Your skin was perfectly fine before you took the pill but now you look like a chicken pox monster. The effects of taking the pill varies in women. Some will cure their acne problems or the reverse. The other effects of using the pill are breast tenderness, nausea, weight gain due to always feeling hungry and loss of libido.

7. You are now vulnerable to STI's, STD's or worst AIDS.

Even if you're in a monogamous relationship, there's no guarantee that you'll not get sexually transmitted infections or diseases. FYI, semen affects your vagina's ph level and it's advisable to wash your intimate area after sex or take a pee to wash off the semen. HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is a kind of sexually transmitted disease which can be passed through mere skin contact by a person infected by it. A person would most likely to get HPV if he or she have sex at an early stage and performed sex with several partners before. Even if he or she is in a monogamous relationship at present, it's recommended that a sexually active woman must be vaccinated by HPV vaccine to protect her from cervical and vaginal cancer.

8. Torn between religion and science.

It's natural to feel guilty sometimes if you're raised believing the concept that premarital sex is a sin. Actually, this concept is a new Christian idea and just a way to scare us all because scientifically speaking, sex have its good and bad effect to the human person. Sex can open up a person's mind into a whole new level. Younger people have difficulties controlling their emotions since they're not mature enough to handle the situation which only adults or a mature mind can comprehend. Instead of focusing on their studies and well-being, teens will likely to have emotional problems especially if sex was shared with the wrong person. Some women even think that it's difficult or impossible anymore to find a person that will accept them after a break up once they've given up their virginity to their previous relationship. Girl, always put in mind that a man who truly loves a woman, her virginity is not an issue.

9. Single and horny.

When the hormone's raging and you have no outlet 'coz you used to do sex when you have the urge . Sadly, you're the type of person that hates masturbation and you're a sucker of having casual hookups because you easily fall in love.

10. Narrow minded people will label you as a whore or slut.

Close-minded people or shall I say hypocrites will judge you based on your sexuality. Stay away from these kind of people and just live your life. I also observe that virgins have unrealistic expectations while non-virgins tend to be more experimental in things that they do in life. Sometimes coming out of your sexual shell helps you build your confidence and release tension.
