Tuition and Income in the States

Whoa, you might say as you look at this. It's way too funky for me. That's OK; I'm going to show you a new feature in the data visualization tool, Tableau, that I use that will make this all make sense. Hang on.

I wondered: Do states with higher median income levels charge more for tuition?  So I began to explore.

On each dashboard, median family income is displayed on the top chart, and college tuition on the bottom.  The view starts with four-year publics, but you can change it using the filter. The first dashboard shows only the rank of the states, from 1 to 5, with 1 being the high value in each.

If you can't make sense of it, don't worry: Use the little box in the upper right hand corner to select any single state, and that state's data will be instantly highlighted on both the income and the tuition chart.  You can see where a state stands on both measures.

The second dashboard (using the tabs across the top) shows the actual inflation-adjusted values (that is, $57,894 dollars in median family income, or $11,592 of tuition, both set to 2013), but the ranks are also displayed.  Use the state highlighter the same way, and hover over the dot for details. Note on this income chart I've broken one of my cardinal rules by not starting the y-axis at zero, for the sake of clarity.

You can get a sort of affordability index by looking at income ranks in comparison to tuition ranks, and you can see trends in both over time by state.

What do you notice here?

OK.  So maybe that's too funky.  Here's the same view, colored by red (high rank) to blue (low rank). If you like the original, it's below.

How Many Colleges Are There, Anyway?

A note in response to some questions from IPEDS geeks and others:  My data selection was from 2014 IPEDS data.  I used Title IV participating, US only, all sectors except administrative units.  That resulted in 7,018 institutions.  My visualization shows 6,876 because there were 142 institutions with absolutely no data reported.  I should have defined in my original post.

Also, the selectivity bands are not defined: Cut points are at less than 15%,, 25%, 40%, 60%, and 75%.  All others are "Not selective/Open."

College. University.  We think we know what these terms mean, and yet, any discussion of colleges in the US invariably leads to someone saying, "It depends on what you mean by college."

For instance, there are about 6,900 post-secondary institutions in the US, but only 2,654 offer a bachelor's degree; they enroll 10.5 million of the 17.6 million undergraduates.

Of all the institutions in the US, only 293 enroll at least 15,000 undergraduates, but this small fraction of colleges enrolls almost 40% of the undergraduates.  Conversely, there are over 4,300 options that enroll 1,000 students or fewer, but collectively they enroll only about one million students.  Our nation's public community colleges enroll over 6 million students on just over 1,000 campuses.

This visualization should give you plenty of options to see the shape of the higher education industry in the US: Filter and select to your heart's content, and as always, reset using the controls at the very bottom.

What surprised you?

Avec Beaucoup D'amour

Do you want to fly, little bird?
Do you want to soar up high
Like many birds flying in the sky?
From this cage you may now fly.

I will set you free now
But fail not to remember me
When life's a weary
Just make a U-turn and find me.

Little bird, I will bid you adieu
Good luck on your journey
Glide on your dreams
Rise above 'em all.

15 Things I Hate About Pokemon Go

1. No battling or attacking wild Pokemons unlike in the hand-held device version. One of the satisfying and challenging aspect in playing the original Pokemon game is to weaken first the Pokemon before you can catch it.

2. All those who dislike physical exertion, such game can become a chore.

3. The game is so engaging that as a result the player become distracted causing them to stepped on poops, fell into puddles of mud or stumbled in broken drain systems.

4. The players might possibly be vulnerable to criminal elements and susceptible to phone snatching, rape, robbery etc.

5. If you want to get ahead of the game, you will have to purchase items involving real money.

6. Taxi fare or additional gas budget if you're really determined to catch all the Pokemons in your area. (Strictly don't play Pokemon Go while driving)

7. No trading of Pokemons yet.

8. Battling other player is restricted or exclusive only in PokeGyms. Players may cause disturbance to the employees working in the building or establishments which happens to be a PokeStop and much worst scenario is government or private employees will play Pokemon Go instead of working.

9. Server and log-in issues.

10. It will drain your battery fast.

11. PokeStops won't load sometimes which means you'll probably lost all of the free Pokemon Items. A PokeStop is basically where you can get your desired items. In Pokemon Go, you'll have to rely on what random items will come out and not get the chance to choose what we really need from the shop.

12. It's impossible to load the game in rural areas where network data services are not strong enough.

13. Non-highly urbanized places doesn't have much PokeStops nor PokeGyms.

14. There's not much socializing going on with other players. Sometimes it's really scary to approach random people.

15. You can't train your Pokemons. It's more like searching and catching Pokemons for data collection to your Pokedex.

The Pokemon Go Benefits

Good news!! Pokemon Go is now officially available for download in the Philippines. Are you one of those people who've waited impatiently to get your hands on it too? I myself is a Pokemon fan since high school. I remember I played it for the first time using my Gameboy Pocket black and white screen and now it can be played using our smartphones. For those who have no idea what is Pokemon Go, it is an augmented-reality game that uses your GPS, maps, camera, and a few sensors in your smartphone for a real-life gaming experience. It means you will have to get out of your house, office, or in your four cornered room and roam the streets, parks and other public spaces in order for you to catch Pokemons. Aside from the fact that the game is obviously addictive, the game not only gave us mental health benefits but it let us get physically involved too. Let's point out below what are these benefits we can gain from playing Pokemon Go.

1. If you think you can catch a Pokemon by just sitting down, you're wrong! You will definitely need to stand up and get your ass moving. Just like what Ash did, he went to different regions in order to catch Pokemons.

2. It also forces you to get out of your cave and stop being an introvert and might meet other Pokemon trainers too.

3. Brings out the resourceful, creative and ingenious part of you by trying to solve up problems and puzzles in your journey to become the best Pokemon master.

4. It also helps you learn more or familiarize about your town because you'll eventually go out to places you've never been before.

5. You will also learn more about history, art and science when the places you need to visit turns out to be  a historical or a science museum.

6.You will also help energize the economy by generating traffic in the commercial part of your cities like malls, museums, parks by purchasing or availing products and services in the general vicinity where you are playing pokemon go because during the long arduous of training and catching pokemon you'll eventually get thirsty, hungry, or tired.

7. It also helps you be aware of the social problems around your town like uneven pavements, damaged infrastructures, garbage littering, etc. Somehow, it will help you be socially aware of the problems around your place by reporting it to the relevant authorities who will handle such issues to prevent future problems.

8. It may also probably bring out the hero in you because you may never know in your Pokemon journey you will come across criminal activities that may be still on going.

9. A good opportunity to do bonding time with family members/lover when you travel across the town in your pursuit to be the greatest Pokemon master/ trainer that has ever lived.

10. Along the way there are puzzles and problems to be solved then each of you in the family will help bring out the spirit of cooperation and team building when you solve puzzles and problems together.

11. Pokemon Go is the new way to find Love. Pokemon go is the new Tinder.

12. Children with extreme autism are showing enhanced social abilities and gamers with nervousness and dejection are stimulated to leave their homes and starting to feel at ease socializing, Huffington Post reported.

Pagsure Uy! by Zhalia Lyrics with English Translation

Bisaya Lyric

Ahaaahhaaahhhh
Matud sa 'kong ginikanan
TRUE LOVE WAITS -- mao akong gikuptan
'di daw magdali aron walay pagmahay
muabot ra kuno ang tawong muhatag kanato ug kalipay
unya miabot ka's kinabuhi ko'g pinakalit
galikay-likay ko apan ikaw gadikit-dikit
wa ko magdahum sa pagsunod-sunod mo kanako
mauyunan taka ikaw na ba ang gipangayo?

Chorus:

Siguraduha dong ug maninuod man ka
kay ug gugma isturyahan ta
wa gyud ko gaduwa-duwa
kay ang akong gipangita bana
wa koy panahon sa pacute-cute
wa koy panahon sa mga joke joke
Pagsure uy
Pagsure uy
Pagsure uy

Mao na ba kini ang giingon ni mama
di ka makapuyo kung muabot siya
bebebebehon ka bisan dili na ta bata
padili-dili gamay apan sa sulod gakirig-kirig na

Chorus:

Siguraduha dong ug maninuod man ka
kay ug gugma isturyahan ta
wa gyud ko gaduwa-duwa
kay ang akong gipangita bana
wa koy panahon sa pacute-cute
wa koy panahon's mga joke joke
Pagsure uy
Pagsure uy
Pagsure uy

Ayaw ug paasa kay ako nahulog na
NBSB ra ba ko basin di ko makaya
kanunay mag-ampo nga ikaw para kanako
ug ako mahigugma wa gyuy sama

Chorus:

Siguraduha dong ug maninuod man ka
kay ug gugma isturyahan ta
wa gyud ko gaduwa-duwa
kay ang akong gipangita bana
wa koy panahon sa pacute-cute
wa koy panahon sa mga joke joke

According to my parents
True love waits--- that's what I"m holding on
Don't hurry to avoid regrets
A person will just come to your life to make you happy
But you suddenly came into my life
I'm trying to escape you but you keep following me
I didn't expect that you keep on chasing me
I might like you
Are you the one I'm hoping for?

Better make sure "dong" you're not playing with me
'coz if we're talking about love, I'm serious about it
Because I'm not just looking for a boyfriend but a husband
I don't have time for guys just acting cute
and I don't have time for guys just kidding around
So better be sure, better be sure, better be sure...

Is this what mom keep telling me about?
You can't stay calm every time he's around
He will try to baby you even if you're an already an adult
I'm acting I don't like it but deep inside by body is convulsing

Better make sure "dong" you're not playing with me
'coz if we're talking about love, I'm serious about it
Because I'm not just looking for a boyfriend but a husband
I don't have time for guys just acting cute
and I don't have time for guys just kidding around
So better be sure, better be sure, better be sure...

Don't keep me hoping boy
'coz I'm falling in love
'coz  I'm NBSB (No Boyfriend Since Birth) and I'm afraid my heart can't take it
I'm always praying that you'll be the right one for me
'coz there's no one like me when I fall in love

Better make sure "dong" you're not playing with me
'coz if we're talking about love, I'm serious about it

Public University State Tuition

Note: The visualizations are not optimized for mobile.  A desktop is recommended for best viewing.

From the annual College Board Trends in College Pricing comes some interesting data, which I've combined into one database for visualization, focusing on public university tuition for residents and non-residents.  This looks complex, but it's pretty simple.

The opening view shows six charts: 2015 tuition for residents; for non-residents; and the premium a non-resident pays (in sticker price) across the top.  On bottom are three scatters: Resident tuition as a function of state funding per FTE student; five-year, inflation adjusted tuition for residents and not residents; and funding per $1000 of personal income and resident tuition.  Of these, I think the middle is the most compelling: Note the states that have raised tuition faster for residents than for non-residents.

The chart starts with US Averages in red, against the states as gray.  Use the control in the middle to highlight a single state on all six views.  As always, hover over any point for details, and use the reset arrow at lower left if you get stuck.

Using the tabs across the top, you can navigate to the map view.  Choose any value at top right to display on the map.  That value is displayed on the state, and the tiles (representing the states) are color-coded.  Red is high; blue is low.  Click on any tile on the map, and a summary of that state appears at the bottom.

Would your state legislator find this valuable? If so, I'd encourage you to forward to her or him. Otherwise, leave a comment at the bottom, letting me know what you see.

Public Institutions and Low-income students

Note: Visualizations are not mobile friendly.  I recommend a laptop or desktop for viewing this site.

Someone asked me today about what I thought higher education's biggest challenge was, and I said college costs without thinking.  And a few hours later, I still think that, with a twist: College costs for low-income students, especially at public institutions who presumably have a primary mission of educating students of all income levels in their state.

To be sure, costs are too high at private institutions, and many of the trends you'll see here are carried over and amplified in the private sector; but private colleges and universities may exist for different reasons, and that can be hard to capture in a visualization like this.

There are two views here, using the tabs across the top.  The first is a scattergram, arraying almost all 660 US, four-year public colleges and universities that admit freshmen (a few are missing data).  The x-axis shows in-state tuition in 2013, and the y-axis shows net price for freshman students who come from families with incomes of $30,000 or less, and who are paying the in-state tuition, most of whom are presumably in-state residents.  The color shows the percentage of students enrolled who receive a federal Pell grant, a program for very-low income students.

Reference lines show the unweighted, institutional averages, which allows the creation of quadrants, roughly:

  • The upper right, or high tuition, high net cost
  • The lower right, or high tuition, low net cost
  • The lower left, or low tuition and low net cost
  • The upper left, or low tuition, high net cost

Color here is important: Red dots are those colleges with lower percentages of Pell students; blue dots show higher values, although I've capped the color range at 40%, about the national average, if you include all types of institutions.  It's important because it shows how many students these institutions enroll, not just how well they do at reducing price (if they do.)  In other words, it's a bit easier to do a lot to reduce cost for students if you don't do it for very many; it's harder on your budget if you enroll more.

You can limit the view to states, regions, Land Grant status, or by using the filters to show only institutions with certain admit rates or Pell percentages.  As always, take a look at California.  Well done, California.

The second view shows in-state tuition over time, accompanied by net price for three groups of students who receive aid.  Students from:

  • Families with income of less than $30,000 (gold)
  • Families with income of $30,000 to $48,000 (orange)
  • Families with income of over $110,000 (the highest band reported in IPEDS).  This is in blue.

The bottom chart on the second tab simply turns these numbers into an Net Cost: Tuition ratio.  A value of 1.5, for instance, means that the net price is 1.5 times tuition.  Note the definition of net price:

Net cost shows all costs associated with cost of attendance, minus grant aid.  For example, a university may have a tuition of $5,000, but a cost of attendance of $17,000 to include housing, meals, transportation, and personal expenses.  If a student receives $10,000 in grant aid, that student's net price is $7,000, which is greater than tuition alone.

As always, hover for details, and use the reset button at lower left if you get stuck.

What do you see here?  What else would you like to see?

Skinmate Shark Oil Review

Recently, I've made a review about my new beauty regimen. If you want to read about it, check it here. Anyway, I'm on my third week using Dr. Alvin's Professional Skin Care - Maintenance Set. Within the three weeks, I've noticed that it really didn't helped me with my hormonal acne. I have this skin condition where 1 week before and 1 week after my menstruation, my face will be bombarded with pimples. It seems like the maintenance set is not helping at all because it's so mild compared to the other 2 sets (rejuvenating and clarifying). I'm kinda' worried by the fact that my pimples won't stop appearing on my face. I need to find a way to get rid of them as fast as I can because it's back to school next week. Well, I thought I was going to try again GT bleaching cream because I have lots of pimple scars but then I've realized that my All-in-1 Maintenance cream is still half full So, I've decided to buy and use Skinmate's Shark Oil and it's very affordable too for only P55.00 (small bottle).

It's been 3 days from using it and this is how my face looks like today. Hopefully they will be all gone for the next few days. I'm currently peeling off my old skin and my pores looks small today. Let's see....

Asus Zenfone Selfie: Through The Eyes Of A Selfie Addict

It's been four months that I've got my dream phone. I've been eyeing this smartphone for a long time ever since it was out in the market. My first Asus phone is the Zenfone 5. The only thing I've missed about the Zenfone 5 is it's lightness because it has a slimmer battery but the downside of it is it easily runs out of battery. That's my main problem with the Zenfone 5. I was pretty contented and happy for it for a year but then in the long run it can't cope up with my heavy camera usage. My then boyfriend, who is now my best friend, introduced the Asus Zenfone Selfie to me. I was so naive that there's a phone named like that 'coz I thought the name sounds weird. So, he excitedly showed me how it looks like and he made fun of my reaction 'coz I'm an over reactor. LOL! OMG! What a lovely looking  phone indeed. The pastel colors are just so enticing and I'm quite bewitched by the baby blue color because that is my favorite color. To make the long story short, It took me 1 year to save for my Asus Zenfone Selfie. Honestly, I've raised P8,000.00 only until February 2016 and come near Valentine's day 2016 and Lazada is giving away P500.00 voucher if you buy an item worth P2000.00. Time is of the essence at that time, my bestfriend supplemented the P3,000.00 deficiency because the phone is goddamn worth P10,995.00 minus the voucher from Lazada. Remember, I'm unemployed. LOL!

He informed me that Lazada called informing  him that the P500.00 voucher has expired or is no longer acceptable anymore. I thought I was gonna save P500.00 from the P11,000.00 so can buy a protective case from the excess.
my reaction when he said he still going to buy it anyway funny gif excitement
But he said, he is still going to buy it no matter what. He knew I've waited for so long  and he doesn't want to see me sad. Yep, the guy is such a sweet person. I'm so lucky!!!
Well, I've painstakingly waited for about 5 days until my Asus Zenfone Selfie arrived. He picked it up at LBC 'coz we chose to buy it using their Cash on Delivery option. By the way, if you buy in Lazada and the value of the item is worth P5000.00 above or so, they will call you by phone and make a verification if you are really serious buying the item. This is to avoid fraud on their part also. Some are just bogus buyers. Remember, if you are just a bogus buyer in Lazada, your name will be banned the next time you purchase. I'm not sure if they'll give you a warning first or not. Anyway, I've finally got it. Just imagine me with this reaction when I received my Selfie.

Now let's get down to the serious part...

The Asus Zenfone Selfie is the pioneering smartphone camera fusion which means the front and rear camera of the phone have both 13 MP full resolution and a LED flash. The other camera features are enumerated below:
  • The front camera has a f/2.2-aperture, 88-degree wide-angle lens.
  • The dual-LED Real Tone flash gives the effect of  natural lighting
  • In the Selfie Panorama mode, you’re able to shoot selfies with an outlook of up to 140 degrees — so everything and everyone is part of your shot.
  • The front camera has a Manual Mode also.
  • The macro focusing can capture the subject as close as 6 cm (2.3 inches)  plus laser auto-focusing that’s as quick as 0.2 seconds. The exceptional five prism Largan lens are transported by high-precision motor, maximizing focal depth for extreme close-ups.
  • The Beautification mode has a live make up presets (blush, skin smoothing and brightening, face slimming, eye enlargement). It has a unique timer also for if you want to take a Selfie without  your arms getting on your way.
  • Burst Mode using the front and back camera (taking a couple of photos using a single prolonged touch of the shutter icon)
  • All other camera modes for the FRONT camera are Auto, Super Resolution, Low Light, Night Mode, HDR, Depth of Field, Filter Effects, GIF animation, Miniature, Time Rewind, Smart Remove, All Smiles and Timelapse (I've already mentioned Beautfication mode,Selfie Panorama and Manual Mode above)
  • Camera modes for the REAR/BACK camera are also Auto, Manual, HDR, Super Resolution, Low Light, Night Mode, Depth of Field, Filter Effects, GIF animation, Miniature, Panorama, Time Rewind, Smart Remove, All Smiles, Timelapse, Slow Motion and PanoSphere.
  • Super Resolution shot is up to 52MP (4x greater than a single shot)

Sample photos of Asus Zenfone Selfie using the different camera presets

Manual Mode

ZenFone Selfie’s supreme simplicity turns pro whenever you want. One tap on the Manual button puts you in full control of 13 professional-grade settings. Set your own shutter speed and exposure value, manually adjust the white balance, or choose the preferred ISO level — all managed with the ZenUI’s beautiful fluidity. (source)

In Manual mode, you can choose on your own preference how you want your photo to come out.
Miniature Mode

The Miniature Mode is really just tilt-shift, and this trick makes landscape photos look like miniature models. In other words, it captures a photo of real size object and then turns it into a small-scale model.
This is how the Miniature mode looks like. This is a screenshot photo before I took the photo below in Miniature camera mode using Asus Zenfone Selfie

It provides various filter effects for a creative and fun images. Effects included are Pixelize, Negative, Sepia,Edge effect, Cartoon, Pencil, Grayscale, Hue, Romantic, Vintage, Lomo. There's no need to download an app featuring these effects since it's already included in the Asus Zenfone Selfie.

Super Resolution Mode

Combines multiple shots to create incredible, detailed photo with up to 52 MP resolution. Do not move the camera yet while taking the first shot because it will again retake the photo 3x. So, 13MP x 4 takes = 52 MP in total.

Depth of Field Effect

This mode captures close-up subjects giving it with a soft background. It focuses more the object from the front and creates a blur for the object behind it.

Low Light mode and Night mode (What's the difference?)

in Low Light mode, it enables 4x light sensitivity, That even in dark situations, you can still take photos. There is so much noise in the photo using this mode while in Night Mode, it allows a slower shutter speed to capture more light in dark scenes. Better not shake your hands using these modes. However, there's not much noise in the photo using the Night Mode.

This mode expands the dynamic range of luminosity and grabs more details out from high-contrast or strong backlit scenes. Super HDRtechnology enables up to 4x brightness in dimly-lit situations so that the resulting images look exactly like what your eyes see. (source)

Panosphere Mode

This mode is exclusive to ASUS, allows you to take full spherical photos of your surrounding environment. Follow the instruction on the phone to easily shoot any scene around you. Moving the phone up, down, left and right will capture the entire surrounding landscape. Unlike the regular panorama mode,  you can only take photos from left to right.

This mode allows you to take panoramic or wide angled images up to 140 degrees using the front camera.  **Photo to be updated**

Slow Motion Mode

During this mode, your camera captures your subject with very high frame rate and plays it back in slow speed. This mode is very handy during sports, or any fast moving objects like dogs running, kids playing, or dancing.

Timelapse Mode

It records the video in a slower pace and playback in normal speed. In this mode the time appears to move faster.

Combines multiple shots to create incredible, detailed photo with up to 52 MP resolution. Do not move the camera yet while taking the first shot because it will again retake the photo 3x. So, 13MP x 4 takes = 52 MP in total.

Selfie Panorama

This mode allows you to take panoramic or wide angled images up to 140 degrees using the front camera.  **Photo to be updated**

Slow Motion Mode

During this mode, your camera captures your subject with very high frame rate and plays it back in slow speed. This mode is very handy during sports, or any fast moving objects like dogs running, kids playing, or dancing.

Timelapse Mode

It records the video in a slower pace and playback in normal speed. In this mode the time appears to move faster.
