Tuition and Income in the States

Whoa, you might say as you look at this. It's way too funky for me. That's OK; I'm going to show you a new feature in the data visualization tool, Tableau, that I use that will make this all make sense. Hang on.

I wondered: Do states with higher median income levels charge more for tuition?  So I began to explore.

On each dashboard, median family income is displayed on the top chart, and college tuition on the bottom.  The view starts with four-year publics, but you can change it using the filter. The first dashboard shows only the rank of the states, from 1 to 5, with 1 being the high value in each.

If you can't make sense of it, don't worry: Use the little box in the upper right hand corner to select any single state, and that state's data will be instantly highlighted on both the income and the tuition chart.  You can see where a state stands on both measures.

The second dashboard (using the tabs across the top) shows the actual inflation-adjusted values (that is, $57,894 dollars in median family income, or $11,592 of tuition, both set to 2013), but the ranks are also displayed.  Use the state highlighter the same way, and hover over the dot for details. Note on this income chart I've broken one of my cardinal rules by not starting the y-axis at zero, for the sake of clarity.

You can get a sort of affordability index by looking at income ranks in comparison to tuition ranks, and you can see trends in both over time by state.

What do you notice here?

OK.  So maybe that's too funky.  Here's the same view, colored by red (high rank) to blue (low rank). If you like the original, it's below.

How Many Colleges Are There, Anyway?

A note in response to some questions from IPEDS geeks and others:  My data selection was from 2014 IPEDS data.  I used Title IV participating, US only, all sectors except administrative units.  That resulted in 7,018 institutions.  My visualization shows 6,876 because there were 142 institutions with absolutely no data reported.  I should have defined in my original post.

Also, the selectivity bands are not defined: Cut points are at less than 15%,, 25%, 40%, 60%, and 75%.  All others are "Not selective/Open."

College. University.  We think we know what these terms mean, and yet, any discussion of colleges in the US invariably leads to someone saying, "It depends on what you mean by college."

For instance, there are about 6,900 post-secondary institutions in the US, but only 2,654 offer a bachelor's degree; they enroll 10.5 million of the 17.6 million undergraduates.

Of all the institutions in the US, only 293 enroll at least 15,000 undergraduates, but this small fraction of colleges enrolls almost 40% of the undergraduates.  Conversely, there are over 4,300 options that enroll 1,000 students or fewer, but collectively they enroll only about one million students.  Our nation's public community colleges enroll over 6 million students on just over 1,000 campuses.

This visualization should give you plenty of options to see the shape of the higher education industry in the US: Filter and select to your heart's content, and as always, reset using the controls at the very bottom.

What surprised you?

Avec Beaucoup D'amour

Do you want to fly, little bird?
Do you want to soar up high
Like many birds flying in the sky?
From this cage you may now fly.

I will set you free now
But fail not to remember me
When life's a weary
Just make a U-turn and find me.

Little bird, I will bid you adieu
Good luck on your journey
Glide on your dreams
Rise above 'em all.

15 Things I Hate About Pokemon Go

1. No battling or attacking wild Pokemons unlike in the hand-held device version. One of the satisfying and challenging aspect in playing the original Pokemon game is to weaken first the Pokemon before you can catch it.

2. All those who dislike physical exertion, such game can become a chore.

3. The game is so engaging that as a result the player become distracted causing them to stepped on poops, fell into puddles of mud or stumbled in broken drain systems.

4. The players might possibly be vulnerable to criminal elements and susceptible to phone snatching, rape, robbery etc.

5. If you want to get ahead of the game, you will have to purchase items involving real money.

6. Taxi fare or additional gas budget if you're really determined to catch all the Pokemons in your area. (Strictly don't play Pokemon Go while driving)

7. No trading of Pokemons yet.

8. Battling other player is restricted or exclusive only in PokeGyms. Players may cause disturbance to the employees working in the building or establishments which happens to be a PokeStop and much worst scenario is government or private employees will play Pokemon Go instead of working.

9. Server and log-in issues.

10. It will drain your battery fast.

11. PokeStops won't load sometimes which means you'll probably lost all of the free Pokemon Items. A PokeStop is basically where you can get your desired items. In Pokemon Go, you'll have to rely on what random items will come out and not get the chance to choose what we really need from the shop.

12. It's impossible to load the game in rural areas where network data services are not strong enough.

13. Non-highly urbanized places doesn't have much PokeStops nor PokeGyms.

14. There's not much socializing going on with other players. Sometimes it's really scary to approach random people.

15. You can't train your Pokemons. It's more like searching and catching Pokemons for data collection to your Pokedex.

The Pokemon Go Benefits

Good news!! Pokemon Go is now officially available for download in the Philippines. Are you one of those people who've waited impatiently to get your hands on it too? I myself is a Pokemon fan since high school. I remember I played it for the first time using my Gameboy Pocket black and white screen and now it can be played using our smartphones. For those who have no idea what is Pokemon Go, it is an augmented-reality game that uses your GPS, maps, camera, and a few sensors in your smartphone for a real-life gaming experience. It means you will have to get out of your house, office, or in your four cornered room and roam the streets, parks and other public spaces in order for you to catch Pokemons. Aside from the fact that the game is obviously addictive, the game not only gave us mental health benefits but it let us get physically involved too. Let's point out below what are these benefits we can gain from playing Pokemon Go.

1. If you think you can catch a Pokemon by just sitting down, you're wrong! You will definitely need to stand up and get your ass moving. Just like what Ash did, he went to different regions in order to catch Pokemons.

2. It also forces you to get out of your cave and stop being an introvert and might meet other Pokemon trainers too.

3. Brings out the resourceful, creative and ingenious part of you by trying to solve up problems and puzzles in your journey to become the best Pokemon master.

4. It also helps you learn more or familiarize about your town because you'll eventually go out to places you've never been before.

5. You will also learn more about history, art and science when the places you need to visit turns out to be  a historical or a science museum.

6.You will also help energize the economy by generating traffic in the commercial part of your cities like malls, museums, parks by purchasing or availing products and services in the general vicinity where you are playing pokemon go because during the long arduous of training and catching pokemon you'll eventually get thirsty, hungry, or tired.

7. It also helps you be aware of the social problems around your town like uneven pavements, damaged infrastructures, garbage littering, etc. Somehow, it will help you be socially aware of the problems around your place by reporting it to the relevant authorities who will handle such issues to prevent future problems.

8. It may also probably bring out the hero in you because you may never know in your Pokemon journey you will come across criminal activities that may be still on going.

9. A good opportunity to do bonding time with family members/lover when you travel across the town in your pursuit to be the greatest Pokemon master/ trainer that has ever lived.

10. Along the way there are puzzles and problems to be solved then each of you in the family will help bring out the spirit of cooperation and team building when you solve puzzles and problems together.

11. Pokemon Go is the new way to find Love. Pokemon go is the new Tinder.

12. Children with extreme autism are showing enhanced social abilities and gamers with nervousness and dejection are stimulated to leave their homes and starting to feel at ease socializing, Huffington Post reported.
